Top 10 Job Search Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

By Prayank Chiraman

Whether you’re fresh out of college (like I was) or switching careers, job hunting can feel overwhelming. But what makes it harder are the common mistakes most job seekers make—often without even realizing it.

Based on my own journey and research, here are the top 10 job search mistakes and how you can avoid them to boost your chances of success.

1. Using the Same Resume for Every Job

🔻 Mistake: Sending out one generic resume for all roles.
Fix: Tailor your resume for each position. Highlight the skills and experiences that match the job description. Use keywords directly from the posting.

2. Not Optimizing for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

🔻 Mistake: Fancy fonts, graphics, or missing keywords make your resume unreadable by ATS.
Fix: Use a clean, simple format. Include role-specific keywords naturally throughout your resume.

3. Ignoring the Power of a Cover Letter

🔻 Mistake: Skipping the cover letter or writing a generic one.
Fix: Write a short, personalized letter that explains why you’re a great fit—and why you’re excited about the company.

4. Applying for Jobs You’re Clearly Unqualified For

🔻 Mistake: Applying to everything and anything, hoping something sticks.
Fix: Focus on roles where you meet at least 70% of the requirements. It’s okay to stretch, but don’t apply blindly.

5. Not Leveraging LinkedIn

🔻 Mistake: Not having a complete or active LinkedIn profile.
Fix: Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date, connect with professionals in your field, and engage with industry content.

6. Being Passive in the Job Hunt

🔻 Mistake: Only applying through job boards.
Fix: Network, reach out to hiring managers, attend virtual events, and ask for referrals. Many jobs are filled before they’re even posted.

7. Failing to Follow Up

🔻 Mistake: Sending an application or doing an interview—and never following up.
Fix: Send a polite thank-you email after interviews, and follow up after 5–7 days if you haven’t heard back.

8. Not Practicing for Interviews

🔻 Mistake: “Winging it” during interviews.
Fix: Use AI mock interviews or record yourself answering common questions. Prepare your STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) stories.

9. Ignoring Your Online Presence

🔻 Mistake: Having an outdated or unprofessional online profile—or worse, no digital footprint at all.
Fix: Google yourself. Make sure your LinkedIn and portfolio (if relevant) reflect your best self.

10. Taking Rejection Personally

🔻 Mistake: Getting discouraged by a “no” or lack of response.
Fix: Rejection is part of the process. Use it as a learning tool, ask for feedback when possible, and keep improving.

Final Thoughts

I made several of these mistakes when I started my job hunt—but I also learned from them. The key is to stay proactive, positive, and open to feedback. A smarter approach leads to better results.

If you’re job searching right now, take a step back and ask: Am I falling into any of these traps? Fixing just one or two can make a huge difference.
